Why a yearly physical matters
Many common conditions cause no symptoms at first. A routine physical is how they are found while they are still easy to manage, including:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes and prediabetes
- High cholesterol
- Thyroid problems
- Heart and lung concerns
- Changes in mood, sleep or stress
Seeing the same practice every year also gives your provider a baseline, so a change from last year stands out.
What your physical includes
Vital signs
Blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, temperature and oxygen level.
History review
Past conditions, family history, medications, allergies and any new symptoms or concerns.
Physical exam
Heart and lungs, abdomen, skin and lymph nodes, a basic neurological check and joint movement.
Vaccine review
A check of what you are due for, from flu and Tdap to shingles and pneumonia vaccines.
Screenings by age and risk
Labs such as a cholesterol panel, A1c, thyroid, liver and kidney tests when they are indicated.
A plan for the year
A clear summary of what to keep doing, what to change and when to come back.
If your provider orders labs, they can usually be drawn here in the office. Vaccines you are due for can often be given at the same visit.
Sports, school and work physicals
The practice completes physicals for:
- Middle school and high school athletes
- College students and club sports
- Camps and school programs
- Work and employment physicals
Bring the school or employer form with the history section filled out ahead of time. A sports physical is focused on whether it is safe to play. It does not replace a yearly checkup, so many families combine the two in one visit. Our guide to sports physicals in Cheyenne covers what to bring and when to book.
More than a checklist
Your visit is also a chance to talk about the things that shape long-term health: eating habits, activity that fits your body, sleep, stress and mood. If a chronic condition needs attention, your provider can fold it into your plan or set up ongoing care.
